10 Reasons Why We Should Sing to the Lord

God has done so much for us. In light of His mercies (Rom 12:1) how could we not lift our voices in total worship—even in the midst of trials?! In this post I want to list… woman with outstretched arms at sunset with flock of birds and musical notes

10 Reasons Why We Should Sing to the Lord

1. We’re told to in the Bible
(Ps 66:1-2, Ps 95:1-3)

2. God is worthy of our worship

3. Singing in times of heartache is an expression of our sacrificial love for God

Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.
(Heb 13:15 NLT)

4. Helps motivate us to do difficult or mundane tasks
Singing makes the time go by faster, and may even make it fun. Try exercising to upbeat praise music and see if you can work off a few extra pounds!

5. Song is a good way to remember key truths about God and His promises
It’s a tool parents and teachers often use to help children learn. Even God told Moses to teach the children of Israel in song (Deut 31:19).

6. Singing is a good outlet for our emotions, good or bad
It’s a way to express what’s going on inside our hearts and minds.

This next one is a biggie

7. Singing helps us overcome negative emotions such as fear and depression

Fear
A good example of using song while afraid is found in 2 Chronicles 20 when King Jehoshaphat sent singers out first—ahead of the soldiers when facing a vast army! And when they began to sing and praise God, the Lord set ambushes against the enemy armies and defeated them.

Depression
Music ministers to our souls. I’ve successfully used it many times. It works because:

  • Singing to the Lord shifts our focus off of us and unto the Lord where it belongs and to the only One who can truly help.
  • It reminds us of the hope we have, that this life is not all there is.
  • God inhabits the praises of His people (Ps 22:3), and in His presence there is joy forevermore (Ps 16:11). He is our strength and our song (Is 12:2).

You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!
(Ps 30:11-12)

Look, I’m not saying singing will automatically make you happy. But something happens when you sing praises to God and He meets you at your point of need.

I have found that even if singing doesn’t always lift my spirits, it keeps me, at the very least, from going down into a deeper pit of despair. When we sing songs like, “I’ll Praise You in the Storm” (Casting Crowns), even though our hearts are breaking, it gives us a hope and resolve to keep persevering. That strength and power comes from God. It is not the power of our singing (or praying). No. The power is in the One to whom we pray or sing. He is the ONLY ONE who can take the credit.

I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. (Ps 40:1-3 KJV)

And that brings us to another reason to sing:

8. It is a testimony to others

many shall see it…and shall trust in the Lord (Ps 40:3 KJV).

When other people see our joy and hope they’ll be encouraged as well. They may even ask how in the world we can sing in the midst of such difficult circumstances—then we can tell them of the hope we have in Christ.

9. It defeats Satan, our enemy

Just as we saw above in 2 Chronicles 20

10. Singing with other believers bonds us closer together in an unexplainable way

So my friend, sing to the Lord when you’re happy, sad, discouraged or under attack. Sing to the Lord when He has just done something wonderful or if He’s allowed something hard. Sing to the Lord simply because He is worthy and because He’s so worth it!
