Are you an emotional yoyo like me? Up and down in how you feel? Thinking you are destined to act in accordance with your mood? What are we to do?! Is there no hope for us? More than 10 years ago I became sick and tired of being dominated by my feelings, but I didn’t know […]
I have to face it! I’ll always be an emotional yo-yo—up and down in what I’m feeling. I want to stay high or at least even-keeled, happy, and always at peace. But that’s an unrealistic goal for me—at least in this fallen world. I must learn to deal with it. Maybe some of you are […]
Raging emotions. They cause such havoc in our lives; frequently leading us to sinful responses against God and others! It isn’t wrong to feel angry, but it is to retaliate. But it’s such a fight, often requiring every ounce of our being not to succumb! So how do we keep our joy and peace from being […]
I wrote this blog earlier this year and I wanted to give you an update on the issue I mention in this blog. So watch for some exciting news at the end! ~~~~~ Are you like me? With the tendency to run ahead of God? I am a doer and I have a hard time […]
You’re sitting there, overwhelmed with the presence of God. You’re singing praises, utterly grateful for God’s love and the saving of your soul. “How can it ever get better than this?!” You feel so complete, contented, and loved. Then something else happens. God comes through once again in a miraculous way, answers an impossible prayer, […]
Whenever you step out and start serving the Lord, Satan isn’t happy. He will try to discourage you. That’s what’s been happening to me. My last few blogs have been on spiritual warfare and how to defeat our greatest enemy. I knew going in that I was going to jostle the hornet’s nest in writing […]
You’re waiting at the station for the bus to take you to boot camp. You’re nervous, scared; not knowing what to expect. You’re leaving an awful lot behind. Will all this be worth it? Did I scare some of you in my last blog—that if you believe in Jesus as your Savior you’re in Christ’s army? I hope […]
When I became a Christian I didn’t understand that I had actually enlisted into the army of Christ. I don’t think most of us do, unless you live in a country where Christians are severely persecuted for believing in Jesus. Even after I recognized that we Christians are in spiritual warfare with the enemy of […]
Do you ever struggle? With repeated sin issues, with desiring to change a bad habit or to follow through with your resolutions—only to fail again? What in the world is going on? We’re at war with the enemy of God and our souls! I think many of us believe that there shouldn’t be a struggle once […]
Pain. It’s a BIG topic. Dealing with it can be difficult. However, the Lord has shown us that we do not have to be overcome by the hardships of life. As I said last time, in order to deal with our pain properly we need to be Open-minded, Open-handed, and Open-hearted Now with this open attitude, […]
How do you actually deal with pain? It’s easy to just spout off a list of do’s and don’ts or a bunch of key verses like, “Consider it pure joy…; Rejoice in the Lord always…” (Jas 1:2, Phil 4:4). But how do you really do it? Having experienced a lot of pain in my life, like many of […]
Pain doesn’t have to destroy or debilitate us. As I said 2 weeks ago I’ve discovered three wonderful truths about pain. I covered the first 2 truths in the previous blogs: Pain doesn’t have to be wasted and it can be minimized. Now onto my favorite—joy despite the presence of pain. I’ve written about this many times before and […]
Pain. It’s unavoidable! But believe it or not, we cause so much of it ourselves—needlessly. The way we respond to the daily circumstances of our lives will determine how much of that pain will be unnecessary. But you did not listen to me, declares the Lord, and you have provoked me with what your hands have made, […]
No one likes pain—of any kind, whether it’s physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual. But since pain in this world is inevitable (Jn 16:33), we need to learn how to handle it. And guess what. I have discovered 3 wonderful things about pain: 1. Pain doesn’t have to be wasted. 2. Pain can be minimized. 3. There can be […]
Angie is sitting at the bedside of her beloved mother. She’s been ill for such a long time. Fervently Angie has prayed for God’s healing. But her mom is not only still sick but rapidly failing. “Why hasn’t God healed her? Doesn’t He care? He’s healed other people miraculously. Why won’t He do the same […]
Every time I: See a Passion Play Think of how God saved me from an eternity in hell Recall that moment in time when the “Hound of Heaven” caught me; when my eyes were open to the truth of the gospel Think how wonderfully different my life in Christ is Remember how I have been […]
Easter is my favorite holiday (actually I prefer the term holy day). But this year Easter was even more special because it was also my spiritual birthday. 34 years ago Jesus saved this poor soul from spending eternity in hell! I never get tired of thinking of what Christ did for me on that momentous day. Let […]
As I look around this world, I see God’s beauty everywhere—in the mountains, birds, flowers, sunsets—my kitty. I can only imagine how much more beautiful the Creator of all this must be! That’s outward beauty. But I also see His beauty in—a mother nursing her child in the wee hours of the night, a daughter […]
It’s spring! Trees are budding out. Forsythias and daffodils cheer us with their bright yellow blooms. Everything is coming to life with new growth after a long seemingly dead winter. All this newness refreshes our spirits and renews our hope. (Plus spring gets me itching to go hiking so I can learn new lessons!) I […]
Nehemiah said, “…This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Neh 8:10) We’ve heard it, sang it, but what do the words “The joy of the Lord is my strength” really mean? For a long time I was clueless to its meaning. So… What is the joy […]
I wrote this blog originally about 5 years ago, but these truths are timeless and worth revisiting. So here we go: ~~~~~ I’ve been feeling down a lot lately—not constantly, but too frequently for my tastes. One of the reasons has been chronic back pain. Being in pain has always been difficult for me. Can […]
Where do you go when you need encouragement? As you saw in my last blog, God knows exactly how to comfort us and that we don’t even need to wait for it. So why wouldn’t we automatically turn to Him first to meet our needs? Because we often just don’t know any better! I remember a […]
We all hate to wait. We want it and we want it NOW! It’s part of our human nature. But this attitude doesn’t please the Lord. How do I know? Because He has repeatedly told us so in His Word and He’s convicted me a bunch! So I have been seriously working on this for […]
“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zep 3:17) I’ve suffered for many years with a low self-image. That’s because I was looking at myself through my eyes and not God’s. God made […]
Learning how to discipline ourselves is a huge topic, way more than I can cover in this series. So in this last blog I’d like to focus on how to make the process more enjoyable, or at least less painful. I also have a free resource for you. Here are 3 Keys to help change […]
We need help in making God-honoring changes in our lives. Last time I covered the 1st 5 steps to achieve lasting change. Here’s the rest. 6. Evaluate your failures Instead of constantly berating yourself, evaluate why you failed. Use your defeat to propel you forward. Were your defenses down due to tiredness, stress, or some […]
All of us struggle in changing habits. We often fail because it takes consistent and hard discipline. But the good news is you can learn to train yourself, and even come to enjoy your new routine! Here are the first 5 of 10 steps to help you make those lasting changes. 1. Determine your reason […]
I can’t help it! Just this once. I’ll start tomorrow. Just one more bite…. Ever find yourself saying these things? We all have. But how do we change? How do we stop a bad habit or begin a new one? By exercising our will “muscle.” Most of us have flabby muscles when it comes to […]
Early on in our hiking days Ed and I seldom encountered stream crossings—until we started hiking the Smokies. On one such trail, we encountered many of these streams. And they were much bigger than I was used to! My fear of slipping and seriously getting hurt made me want to turn around. I had never learned […]
There we were, 20 years ago hiking up Mount Ida in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was a tough 5 mile trek up to the nearly 13,000′ peak—a significant climb even if you are in good shape which Ed and I were back then. What made this hike especially difficult were the many […]
As many of you know I love to hike, and I have learned many spiritual lessons as I’ve trampled along trails. Although trekking through life is probably an overused metaphor I’m going to use it anyway—from a hiker’s point of view. Lesson #1 The Right trail Just like you don’t want to wander through life, […]
Did you ever wonder what transpired during Mary’s 3-month visit with her cousin, Elizabeth? After receiving news from God that she was to be the mother of the Messiah, she needed someone she could confide in and rejoice with. She must have had a close relationship or at least a deep respect and admiration for […]
It happens to me every year—whenever I hear certain Christmas carols like— O Holy Night and O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. I get choked up; my emotions overtaking me. What about you? Why is that?
If we want to stop being engulfed and overwhelmed with life, we need to do life God’s way and become preoccupied with Christ and His agenda instead of own.
When we get caught up in the details and lose sight of the big picture, we get discouraged. We need to remember why we are here—our purpose, which is to bring glory to God. “Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” (Is 43:7) Getting […]
I have to be honest with you. Adjusting to my new location has been a lot harder than I expected. I knew it would be hard, but not this hard! I have too often found myself engulfed once again with my emotions. The Lord showed me that I had lost perspective. I needed to zoom […]
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 Jn 3:1) We are not deserving of this type of extravagant love.
Do you ever feel lonely? I often do. That’s why sensing the presence of God is so important to me. But I know I am not alone in my aloneness. The human race has been plagued with this malady ever since the fall of mankind. There are many reasons why someone might feel lonely—even when not […]
I’m at a place in my life where I relish the times with my Lord in the mornings. I’m a writer, speaker, and teacher and need desperately to stay connected with Him and His Word. But the busyness of the past 2 months has greatly disrupted those precious times. With all the details and aspects […]
Do you have a dream? Something you want to accomplish or see happen in your life or in those you love that seems impossible? Whatever it is, I pray it’s an unselfish one in which God will be glorified. Not all of our dreams come true but… Sometimes God does give us our dreams. I […]
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jer 33:3) Figuring out what God wants us to do can be difficult at times. However, since the Lord does want us to know His will [see last blog], we can discern what it is. Often we […]
I’ve lived in an apartment for the last 2 years. It has certainly been way different than living in my home with a beautiful garden. One of the biggest changes has been in the view: from attractive to ugly. If I look down I see a large ugly parking lot and a stinky dumpster. But […]
In light of my upcoming move and lack of time, I’ve decided to replay one of my favorite blogs for you. I need the reminder to laugh in the middle of all this craziness. Perhaps you do too. ~~~~~ Laughter—oh what an awesome gift! I’m currently working on my next toastmaster’s speech. The project is […]
For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. (Col 2:9-10)* We are complete in Christ! I love this concept, for I used to always think I was inadequate in everything. 2 Peter […]
School is here for most of you and there are a million things to do and juggle. And while I’m not in school or have kids there, I’m moving in 3 weeks! Yikes! If we’re not careful we will become frazzled complainers and poor example-setters for those around us. A few years ago my kind […]
Transition is hard. Most people don’t like change. Although some do. For me, it depends on what that change is! I’m moving again. Two years ago I moved from my wonderful home and garden of 23 years to an apartment. That was tough! This time I’m moving out of state—different location, different church, different people…. […]
If the LORD had not been on our side…the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away. (Ps 124:1, 4-5) I love to hike and I love word pictures—as you are probably aware of by now if you’ve been reading my blogs. Recently I went to […]
“Oh no! Not again!” I thought when a chronic health issue resurfaced recently. I was disappointed and dismayed. And I certainly had a hard time giving thanks in it, even though I am right in the middle of teaching a class on Choosing Gratitude. When my health issue didn’t improve right away, it was even harder […]
In my last 2 blogs, I’ve given you 8 steps on how to release your burdens. Now I want to specifically address one type—the most important one—Guilt. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. (Ps 38:4) Did you know there are 2 kinds of guilt? False guilt and good guilt. How can guilt ever […]
We don’t have to live downtrodden; carrying such heavy loads. We have help. Last time I gave you 3 steps in relieving your burdens. Here are 5 more. Step 4: Allow the Holy Spirit to enable you. By cooperating with God, the Holy Spirit will not only teach you but enable you to bear your load. […]
Life is hard, filled with as many types of burdens as there are grains of sand. But life can also be good. Our heart-breakers need not be back-breakers! We can be of good cheer because Jesus has overcome this heart-breaking world (Jn 16:33). How, you may ask? God’s Word tells us. The answer can be found primarily in […]
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mat 11:28) Today is the 4th of July in which we celebrate the freedom of our country. Yet how many of us are walking around in this free country not truly free? We are so heavily burdened with the […]
It’s 3 a.m. You can’t get back to sleep. That “issue” keeps invading your mind. You’ve prayed, given it to the Lord, chosen to trust Him, yet your mind is bombarded with the replay of that negative situation or a myriad of what if’s. “Am I sinning?” now runs through your mind, adding to your […]
Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. (Is 40:26, emphasis added) Look up at the sky on a clear night out in […]
Drifting through life, living unfocused and in ambiguity. That describes many people. Does it describe you? Why do so many live like that? There are many reasons—lack of knowledge, lack of intentionality, lack of motivation, lack of purpose…. Let me give you one more: Lack of specificity We too often think and act in generalities. Take […]
It was many years ago. I was just doing some chores around the house, thinking about God, enjoying the sense of His presence. I had had a good quiet time with my Savior that morning, though nothing extraordinary. I hadn’t just come out of any recent rebellion, where I felt the weight and guilt of […]
There you are, feeling like someone pushed you out of the plane without a parachute—freefalling again! You simply cannot stop thinking about this all-consuming issue. What do you do? Worry, fret, or pray? We are told to pray in times like these (Phil 4:6-7). But is that all we can do during meltdown moments? As […]
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16:33)* I was telling someone at church this week that you are either in a trial, coming out of a trial, […]
If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. (Mat 10:38-39)* Living sacrificially is a much-repeated theme in Scripture. Jesus spoke of it […]
“Instead of trying to fit this day into a preconceived mold, relax and be on the lookout for what I am doing. This mind-set will free you to enjoy Me and to find what I have planned for you to do. This is far better than trying to make things go according to your own […]
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Gal 5:22-23) I want the Fruit of the Spirit, don’t you? I want to have all the love, joy, and peace that I can. But come to find out —I had it backwards! A tree produces fruit to benefit others, […]
Worries, stress—they can prevent us from seeing God’s handiwork. Problems distort our vision and our ability to hear God. But make no mistake about it—God is at work. When we know that, we’ll keep from despairing. Plus, developing spiritual eyes (faith) pleases God (Heb 11:6). Here’s how to recognize God’s activity: 1. Believe that God […]
Is God asking you to do something that you just don’t want to do? Has He allowed a major difficulty in your life that you just can’t accept? You feel miserable. The issue is ever before you—always on your mind. There’s a battle of the wills going on—yours versus God’s. That lack of peace and “where […]
A flowing scarf, grass rustling in the slightness breeze, a buoy staying afloat despite tumultuous waves. These are all word pictures that connote a compliant spirit. And, of course, there’s the Scriptural picture of moldable clay. “…Can I not do with you as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of […]
Picture a colorful scarf blowing in the breeze. Its movements are one of grace and beauty. Just looking at it puts a smile on your face. Even after being blown about severely, it’s beauty remains, none the worse for wear. Now take that same scarf and starch it. It still has beauty, although diminished. But when strong […]
Christians, young or old in the faith, want to grow and become more like Christ. But how do you do that? One key to this growth process is allowing the Lord to show you specifically where you fall short. We all fall short, but not necessarily in the same place. We need the Lord to tell us what […]
Does God expect us to be perfect? Some of us think so. But that isn’t the truth!
Disappointments—life is full of them. The weather bungled your vacation. Your child is doing poorly in school. That romantic night with your husband was spent watching football on TV. God didn’t answer your prayer in the way you wanted. Expect means: to look forward to; regard as likely to happen; anticipate the occurrence or the […]
It was December 5, 2005. A home remedy* for cleaning rugs nearly killed me! Although my life was spared, my nasal passages were not. I tried to remedy the injury myself, but only worsened it! (I hadn’t learned my lesson yet about home remedies.) Now my taste and smell were greatly distorted. This problem was […]
Last time I discussed the number one key in how to be content—God first. Next in line is having the correct perspective. Get the Right Outlook I’ve talked about this in part 2 of our series in having the right definition of contentment, but here are the specific areas in which to have the right perspective. Develop an Eternal […]
Learning—that’s the operative word here. We’re not born content. I just love the way the Lord tells us not only what to do but how to do it! He gives us the knowledge in His Word and then empowers us to carry it out as we do our part. In these next 3 blogs, I […]
We often sing songs about our need of God, wanting more of Him, more of Jesus. Why is that our heart’s cry? Because we want our needs and desires met and have come to understand Jesus is the only way to have them fulfilled. More of Jesus equates to more abundant living. There are some […]
Amy and Beth sat having coffee. Beth murmured, “I don’t get it! Doesn’t Jack know he’s hurting me by going to that ballgame? He seems to irritate me on purpose. He never cares about how I feel. Do you know what he did the other night He? just doesn’t get it!” What’s Beth’s problem? She […]
Needs. Desires. We all have them, and they are as varied as we are. Some of these longings are legitimate, some are not. We each were created with the core needs of love, acceptance, significance, security, companionship, and hope. However, some of our needs are really just wants. And some of our desires don’t align with […]
What is your definition of contentment? If you think it means NO challenges, pain, or stress, then you will never live a contented life on earth! Jesus said we would have tribulation in this world (Jn 16:33). Yet God wants us to be content, and even commands us to be (Heb 13:5). So we need […]
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. As we partake in our turkey feast, many will be going through that wonderful tradition of naming something for which we are grateful. But what if you are not grateful? Inwardly you groan; desperately hoping you aren’t the first one to speak so you can figure out what in the world […]
Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. (Ps 39:4)* None of us know when our last day—our last moment will be. I want to make a lasting impact for my King; make every moment count. And that’s a good thing. I […]
Out of the blue—just 2 months prior to my greatly anticipated hiking trip to Utah—my excruciating sciatica pain was back! “It can’t be,” I agonized! “I don’t understand!” That was 2 ½ years ago. Not being able to stand or walk for more than a few minutes without overwhelming pain is hard for anyone, especially […]
Inquiring minds want to know. In many ways I am like a cat—wanting to know and understand everything! Curiosity is good—up to a point. Just ask a cat who’s lost 8 of his 9 lives! Although science is making new discoveries everyday, “The more you know, the more you realize how much you don’t know.” […]
I’m a writer. It’s natural for me to write down ideas, new biblical insights, what I’m feeling—now. I didn’t use to be that way. In fact, I hated English and writing in school. I resisted the idea of journaling for many years, thinking it was just a day to day account of events or a […]
Did you ever go down memory lane with your mate or a good friend? Wasn’t it fun? Did you notice how it drew you closer to each other? Why not do the same with your Savior?
Are you living with regret? All of us have made mistakes at one point or another, and they haunt us. How is the abundant life possible with that on our hearts? It isn’t. But we can change that! We don’t have to be weighed down by our past blunders. We have a great God who forgives us […]
Next month I will be celebrating 32 years with Christ as my Savior! It’s been an incredible life, despite the many hardships along the way—including being widowed from my soulmate and 7 surgeries in the last 6 years. I’m sure many of you have had much greater difficulties than me. What keeps you going? I’ll […]
“How are you doing with that ‘issue,’ Angie? Were you tempted at all this week and how did you handle it?” What if you heard these words from your friend in whom you confided a deep secret sin? What if you didn’t do so well in resisting and had to admit you failed—again? Would you […]
“I want to stop sinning!” Do you really? Habitual sin is very difficult to stop. One of the biggest reasons for failure is because we don’t want it bad enough. We need a strong desire to break those strongholds. In order to do that we need to consider: The ramifications of doing that sin and of […]
Ever find yourself in this vicious cycle? Why even bother confessing?! You know you’re only going to fall again. How many times will God forgive the same wrongdoing? Of course, God will not leave you in this state of unrepentance. He will apply pressure in the way of conviction and difficulties to woo you back […]
Satan just loves to get you and me to sin and not repent! Unconfessed sin: Hinders our fellowship with God and others Robs us of peace, joy, and effectiveness for God’s Kingdom Robs God of His glory While we can’t completely stop sinning here on earth—we can strive to desire to stop hurting God and […]
Are you an emotional yoyo? Last time I admitted I was. What are we to do?! Is there any hope for us? YES! About 10+ years ago I wanted desperately to change, but I didn’t know where to go. There’s a lot of psychobabble and false teaching out there. Who and what am I to believe? I […]
I have to face it! I’ll always be a yoyo—up and down in my emotional state. I want to stay high or at least even-keeled, happy, and always at peace. But that’s an unrealistic goal for me—at least in this fallen world. Maybe some of you are like me? (Perhaps we should form our own […]
It was the day before my birthday, 2006. My husband, Ed, came home unexpectedly mid-morning. “Oh, hi, Honey!” I said, “What are you doing home?” He then then gently, but firmly, took me by the shoulders, looked me in the eye, and said these unbelievable words, “I got laid off.” “What!” I exclaimed. “After 29 […]
I think people who jump out of planes for the fun of it are CRAZY! So why do people do it? They must get enjoyment out of it. But what if you didn’t want to parachute and someone made or pushed you out? We all have times in our lives when we feel like our feet are planted […]
Is your life in a state of turmoil? Has a major trial turned your life upside down? Right now mine is. I long for the peace and joy I had. What happened? I let Satan steal it! (Jn 10:10a) Whenever we feel like this, the BEST thing we can do is to dig into God’s Word. […]
So far we’ve covered the first 3 steps of living a victorious life: Get serious about changing, believe it is possible, and change our thinking pattern. Next: Step 4 Make the effort Revamping our deeply entrenched belief system is no easy task! You may be thinking, “But I did try and failed. I just couldn’t do it!” Let […]
Getting serious about changing and believing it is possible are the first 2 steps to victory over a failure mindset. This next one is the most difficult and it doesn’t happen overnight. Step 3 Change your thinking pattern Before we can change an oppressive pessimistic attitude toward life we need to revamp our thinking. That […]
A defeated attitude toward life is so oppressive. We don’t have to live that way! (See my last blog.) We can change from being a victim to a victor, not because I say so, but because God does! Here’s how. Step 1: Get serious about changing The first key is really just wanting to. Can […]
Does this picture describe you most of the time? Are you seeing life through defeated or victorious eyes? I am so sadden by the number of people I meet that are living down-trodden lives—even Christians. Do you know people that always have this heavy sigh in their voice and countenance—like they’re carrying this oppressive load; […]
