Lesson 9
In Need of a Rescue
Do you ever find yourself in need of a rescue? I sure have! Sometimes our plight is due to our own wrong doing, other times it’s because we live in a fallen world.
When I first moved into an apartment my cat, Rascal, got himself into trouble—twice.
The first time was my fault. I had one of my French doors opened on a beautiful fall evening. When I closed it due to dropping temperatures, I didn’t realize Rascal was behind the other door. (Please don’t report me to the ASPCA! It was dark and he’s a dark grey tabby.)
In his struggle to get out of a tight spot (literally), he climbed up the screen door. I kept hearing this thumping sound. “It must be my neighbors,” I thought.
When the strange noise continued, I finally checked the door to the balcony and discovered my error. Poor kitty! He was so distraught by the time he was rescued. Gratefully, he didn’t spurn me.
The second time he got into a pickle was due to his own inquisitiveness. You know what they say about cats and curiosity. (I think Rascal used up a good number of his nine lives!)
I was sitting with a lady that I was discipling. She had kindly brought me a house warming gift. While we were having fun talking about God, Rascal was having fun playing in the gift bag. At first it was funny, but then it became distracting. So, we just tuned him out. Deep in discussion, we were unaware that my silly kitty had gotten his head stuck in the handle of the gift bag. Finally, the noise was so disruptive we looked up.
There he was—trapped and flustered! I wish I had taken a picture but it never entered my mind. I was in “mommy-rescue” mode.
My friend exclaimed, “That’s just like me! Getting myself into trouble and trying to get myself out of trouble.”
Both times Rascal needed my help but he didn’t meow, didn’t cry out. He just kept trying and trying to get out of his predicament on his own—to no avail.
His repeated failed attempts just resulted in more and more fear, anxiety, and frustration.
My poor kitty didn’t know any better, but you and I do—or should.
Like I mentioned in lesson 2, God wants us to understand our desperate need of Him. Sometimes I think God allows us to get into a pickle so that we’ll come to that realization.
Aren’t you glad God rescues us from the predicaments in which we find ourselves—even if it’s our own fault?
The next time you find yourself in a tough spot—call out to Him. Admit your need to be rescued. He’s waiting for you to cry out. Don’t wait. He loves being a Rescuer!
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. (Ps 34:17)
Scratching Below the Surface
- Do you have a tendency to be self-sufficient?
- Think of a time when God rescued you from something big, from something small. Did you call upon Him right away, or did you delay? What was the outcome?
Remember that no problem is too small for you to call upon your Savior.
But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay. (Ps 40:17)
For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. (Ps 72:12)
