“For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”
(Col 2:9–10 NLT)
We are complete in Christ—complete in THIS present moment.
I love this truth—especially because for years I believed I was inadequate in just about everything. But Scripture tells a different story. Complete in THIS Present Moment isn’t just the title of this post—it’s the truth God keeps bringing back to my heart.
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature…. (2 Pet 1:3–4)
What an incredible promise! We already have everything we need for life and godliness—right now.
As a natural go-getter, I long to reach my full potential for God—even though I know I’ll never be perfect this side of heaven. But lately, I’ve wrestled with this idea of Christ’s fullness living within me. How could that be?
Part of my struggle came from thinking in “someday” terms—about the end of my earthly life—rather than right now.
If I truly have all I need in Christ today, then I can rest in the truth that He’s fully equipped me for whatever work He’s planned for me in this very moment. I don’t have to be consumed by future concerns.
Focusing on the Present Moment
Now, don’t get me wrong—it’s wise to plan for the future. But there’s a time and place for that. Too often, I get bogged down in details and distracted by what’s ahead. Recently, I’ve sensed the Lord reminding me to simply focus on the present—to give my best in this very moment (see my previous post, Keeping Eternity in Mind—This Moment in Time).
All those future “plates” I’m trying to keep spinning? He’s much better at that than I am. None of His dishes ever break.
Each of the works God prepared for me (Eph 2:10) is made up of many individual seconds—31,557,600 seconds/year to be exact! When I remember that, I can focus on giving my all to what matters right now:
- In this task (for me, that’s writing this blog)
- When comforting a hurting loved one
- While planning for the upcoming holidays
- During my devotional time alone with my awesome Savior
In these moments, I can give my full attention to glorifying God with my life. When I live this way, I can relax—rest, really—in the peace that comes from trusting Him with all the future moments. I don’t need to get hyper (a polite word for worried) about what’s next.
I know I’ve written about this before (just last week, in fact), but I need these reminders often. Each time, God helps me understand the truth a little better so I can live it more fully. Maybe you need that too.
For clarity, let’s pause for a brief language lesson about peace and anxiety.
In both Hebrew and Greek, the word for peace carries the sense of wholeness, completeness, or tranquility of soul—a calm unaffected by outward circumstances. The Greek word for anxiety, on the other hand, literally means to be divided or distracted.
That contrast says it all:
You can have an undivided heart and mind in any situation when you’re bound to—and yielded to—the Prince of Peace. When you’re relaxed and resting in Him, you can focus better, learn faster, work more efficiently, and experience life more fully.
So until next time, my friends (which I won’t think about right now), remember this:
You are complete in this present moment through Christ, who fills you completely. Be fully present—right here, right now—and experience your Lord, your loved ones, and your life more completely.
