Introduction
There you are—in the hospital with a very sick loved one. It doesn’t look good.
You’re all alone. Your spouse has just passed away or left you, and you’re overwhelmed with grief.
Life just seems to drag on. You’re tired, empty, and discouraged.
If you found yourself in any of these situations, what would you need most?
A conscious awareness that a loving, all-powerful God is with you!
Have you ever felt the presence of God in a difficult moment? You can’t really describe it, but you just knew God was there with you in a special way—comforting you, giving you His peace, joy, assurance, or whatever it was you needed in that moment.
What you and I experience during these times is far more than a feeling. It’s a deep-down sense in the very core of our being—a profound reality of God’s presence.
I know this personally. I lost my wonderful husband to cancer over 15 years ago. I have no children. And I recently moved out of state. I am alone a lot! I often get overwhelmed with loneliness. What keeps me from being consumed by it?
A conscious awareness that a loving, all-powerful God is with me!
I’m so glad I don’t have to remain in a state of loneliness—or any other negative state of mind—and neither do you, for we are not alone. We have God with us. We can know for certain that the last spoken words of our Savior are true:
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Mat 28:20)
Yet even though this truth is life-changing, many struggle to embrace it. If you have experienced abandonment, betrayal, trauma, deep loss, or if you’re walking through a painful season right now, His nearness may feel difficult to believe. But it is still possible for you to know and sense His presence, because the Creator of your soul desires it. And I’m here to help you toward that end.
My prayer is that this book helps you experience fewer moments of fear, loneliness, indecision, insignificance, and emotional emptiness. Notice: I did not say you would never experience them again. But if you apply the principles found in God’s Word, they will significantly decrease. Even though we live in a fallen, imperfect world where challenges and hardships are inevitable, we can learn how to navigate through them more effectively—and even rise above them—just as Jesus assured us we could in John 16:33:
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
I’ve written and spoken about this topic frequently, and so have many others. It’s a common theme in countless songs. But to be honest, I’ve been feeling extra lonely lately. I’ve sensed the Lord nudging me to revisit these truths and expand on them, for both our sakes, and hopefully for His glory as well.
As you begin this journey, may the Lord gently train your heart to notice Him more, trust Him more deeply, and rest in His steady nearness. He has been with you every moment of your life, whether you sensed Him or not, and He delights to make that presence clearer as you seek Him. May these truths help you walk forward with growing confidence in the God who will never leave you.
