Why Growing in Our Awareness of God Matters

I want to be a woman who lives by faith and experiences the abundant life God promises. Don’t you?

I have found that my best days are those when I am aware of God most of the day. When we intentionally set our hearts on God—on who He is and what He desires—we are far more inclined to live in a godly way. That brings Him great glory, but it also benefits us in profound ways. Here are a few reasons… 

Why Growing in Our Awareness of God Brings God Glory and Us Satisfaction

1. Promotes Intimacy

The more we set our minds on God—His character, His works, and His ways revealed in Scripture—the more our love for Him naturally grows. We won’t be able to keep from loving Him.

I pray that…he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you…may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Eph 3:16-19)

As you intentionally think about God, your love for Him will increase—and with it, your conscious thoughts about Him. We naturally think most about the people and things we love. And as our love for God grows, so does our confidence that He loves and accepts us—faults and all. It’s a beautiful, ever-deepening cycle.

2. Helps Us Live Rightly

When our minds are fixed on God, our desire to obey Him naturally grows. We become more alert to temptations, lies, and the subtle workings of sin in our hearts. By God’s grace, this awareness helps us resist temptation, reject falsehood, and repent quickly when we stumble. As a result, we will sin less.

Staying in close fellowship with God leads to a life marked by joy, peace, and a deep sense of fulfillment—blessings that flow from walking in step with Him. And the very act of seeking after God is itself an expression of obedience.

3. Helps Us Remember

When you read the Old Testament, it’s striking how often the Israelites forgot the LORD—even after witnessing many spectacular miracles. Yet, like them, we are prone to forget. In times of pain, we may cry out, “Why have You forgotten me?” when the truth is that God never forgets us (Is 49:15); we forget Him.

They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. (Ps 78:10, see also Is 17:10)

Deliberately increasing our awareness of God helps ensure that we do not forget our Redeemer as the Israelites did.

Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (Ps 103:2)

4. Enables Us to Live by Faith

Scripture calls us to live by faith, not by sight (Heb 10:39). For years, I allowed my emotions to guide me more than God’s truth. My husband would remind me, “Not by sight—nor by feelings.” Feelings matter, but they were never meant to lead.

When we are aware of God and His promises, fear loosens its grip. Confidence grows in knowing God is leading, freeing us to step out in faith and trust Him to provide what we need to obey Him. Living by faith pleases Him (Heb 11:6).

5. Diminishes Negative Feelings

Beyond reducing fear, a conscious awareness of God lessens many other difficult emotions: loneliness, insignificance, discouragement. When our minds are turned toward God and the reality that He is with us, the downward spiral of self-pity turns upward into renewed hope.

My friend, increasing our awareness of God most definitely glorifies Him and benefits us; it is truly a win-win!
