Why Should We Develop Strong Convictions about God?

Last time I talked about the doubts we have about our ministry being wasted time and effort. Having strong convictions will greatly help us during these times. So here is an excerpt from my book, Trust God MORE, on…

Why We Should Develop Strong Convictions about God©

I admire people with strong convictions about the Lord; those with such a strong faith that they keep going no matter the obstacles.

Don’t you?

That’s the stuff the heroes in the Hebrews Hall of Faith are made of (Hebrews 11). That’s what is necessary if we want to be men and women of faith.

When we place our faith in God and He proves Himself faithful, our trust in Him increases. This increased trust in God brings about a deeper conviction of belief—an increased certainty in the center of our being that God is who He says He is. With that comes an increased sense of security and peace.

Conviction is a settled, profound, or earnest belief that something is right.1

It’s a shame that so many people live by their opinions and preferences instead of a deep conviction in the absolute truth of God. The more convinced we are that God can be trusted, the easier it will be to act according to His ways, His principles, and His will. Our hearts will lean more toward following God, even when it’s hard. Surrender and submission, although still difficult, will become the norm.

If we falter and act contrary to our deep convictions, our hearts will be in turmoil. Not until we confess, repent, and realign our hearts with God’s heart will peace return. I love this quote by Michael Youssef…

“An opinion is something you hold, but a conviction is something that holds you. A conviction grips your heart and will not let go.”

However, becoming a person of strong convictions in God is not easy, it takes time and effort. So…

Why should we develop a strong conviction about God?

Because a Greater Conviction about God leads to a:

  • Greater sense of peace and security
  • Greater commitment and resolve to obey and follow God
  • Greater perseverance—we won’t give up when difficulties arise (Heb 10:35-39).
  • Greater motivation—we’ll be more willing to be disciplined and follow through on what it takes, knowing it will be worth it.
  • Greater stand for the truth in the face of opposition
  • Greater testimony

We each have our own unique journey with God. Other people’s testimonies strengthen and encourage us. Their faithfulness is a great example and motivator for us to follow in their footsteps. However, nothing will bolster our hearts more than our own personal experiences with God; on how God came through for us in our time(s) of desperate need.

I have my testimonies. Great men and women of faith have their testimonies.

Now it’s time for you to have your own testimonies!

That is the only way you can glorify God with your life. It doesn’t matter if your life’s testimony seems small next to some of the giants of the faith like those in Hebrews 11. All declarations of God’s faithfulness are important in the big scheme of things as we read in the last two verses in Hebrews 11:

All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us.
(Heb 11:39-40 NLT)

It is wise and beneficial to develop deep convictions about out wonderful Lord. It is the only way we won’t give up during hard times; it’s the only way we can become men and women of faith!

My friend, take the time to get to know and develop a deeper trust in God. Countless people, including those in the Hall of Faith, including myself can honestly and wholeheartedly proclaim it’ll be worth it because He’ll be so worth it!

“But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.”
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. (Heb 10:38-39)
