A man is wandering through the desert, weak and desperate for water. Suddenly, he spots a large sparkling pool ahead. He runs toward it…then stops. He simply stands there staring at it. Then he wonders, “Why am I still thirsty?” |
Ridiculous, right?
But isn’t that what many of us do in our walk with God? Like the psalmist, we cry:
O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
(Ps 63:1)
God’s resources are abundant, unending, and available. Yet many believers still live spiritually dry, discouraged, defeated, and unsatisfied.
Why?
Because we are not drawing from the springs of Life. We are living as spiritual paupers instead of sons and daughters of the King. Jesus came so that we “may have life, and have it to the full” (Jn 10:10). Yet many of us continue trying to live our way instead of God’s way.
Now, I am not talking about earning salvation or “name it and claim it” teaching. I am talking about living as humble, obedient children who receive what God freely offers through Christ. As Jesus said to the woman at the well:
“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (Jn 4:10)
So why don’t more believers drink from the living water God provides?
1. We Don’t Know There’s a Pool
Some believers are unaware of the riches available to them in Christ.
Truth: Jesus became poor so that through Him we might become spiritually rich. (2 Cor 8:9)
2. We Don’t See the Pool
Sometimes sorrow, suffering, distractions, or trials block our vision. The pool is there, but all we can see are the obstacles around it.
Truth: Ask God to open the eyes of your heart to see His blessings. (Ps 119:18; Eph 1:18)
3. We Don’t Believe the Pool Is Available to Us
Guilt, shame, or feelings of unworthiness convince us that God’s grace is for everyone else but us.
Truth: None of us are worthy. That is precisely why grace is so amazing. Jesus invites all who thirst to come and drink. (Jn 7:37-38)
4. The Path to the Pool Seems Too Difficult
Following Christ requires surrender, and sometimes the cost feels too high.
Truth: Those who know Him can testify He is worth every step. (Ps 63:2-3)
5. We Try to Reach the Pool Our Own Way
We want God’s blessings while still clinging to our own wisdom, desires, and self-sufficiency.
Truth: Jesus alone is the way to the Father. We cannot experience the fullness of life apart from walking in His ways. (Jn 14:6)
6. We Think Knowing About the Water Is Enough
It is not enough to know truth intellectually. We must personally receive, trust, and apply it.
Truth: We must actually come and drink. (Rev 22:17)
7. We’re Drinking from the World’s Wells
Many try to satisfy spiritual thirst with worldly things.
Truth: Only Christ can truly satisfy. Jesus said that whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst again. (Jn 4:13-14)
8. We Think We Have Enough Water Already
Self-sufficiency blinds us to our need for God.
Truth: Life apart from God is empty. We were created to need Him.
9. The Enemy Is Fighting Against Us
Satan seeks to distract, discourage, deceive, and keep believers from walking closely with Christ.
Truth: We have victory through Christ. (Rom 8:37)

My friend, believe that His riches are available to you. Put yourself in a position to receive by walking in humble fellowship and obedience with Him. Then…
Take the appropriate action to appropriate the refreshing waters and live the abundant life!
Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters….
Why spend… your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
listen, that you may live.
(Is 55:1-3)
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (Jn 7:38)
